inCITE 2013 (International Conference in Technology)

The  Far Eastern University – East Asia College hosted the 2nd International Conference in Technology with the theme Pursuing Milestones of Research and Education in Technology last November 7 –8, 2013. The conference aims to gather together educators and researchers from technology colleges and universities in the Philippines and abroad.

I was invited as one of the plenary speakers and was to talked about the State of Quality Education on Information Technology and Its Best Practices last November 8, 2013.

NCITE 2013

PSITE had it’s 11h National Conference on IT Education (NCITE 2013) last October 24-26, 2013 at Villa Paraiso Resort & Apartelle, Mambajao, Camiguin. The conference was hosted by Camiguin Polytechnic State College in coordination with PSITE Region 10.

The conference is one of the leading and largest national conventions and gatherings of IT educators in the country. It is aimed to provide a unique forum for ICT professionals to discuss the latest research, development, applications, issues and strategies in ICT; explore new technologies; and to identify solutions for today's challenges related to IT. Aside from these, it also serves as venue to exchange our ideas and knowledge for personal growth and learning.

NCITE 2013 provides a venue to present innovative ideas, approaches, developments and results of research projects in the areas of information technology and technology-based education. This conference promotes the exchange of information between researchers, administrators, faculty members and IT practitioners. It aimed also to provide a unique forum for ICT professionals to discuss the latest research, development, application, issues and strategies in ICT. Aside from these, it also serves as venue to exchange our ideas and knowledge for personal growth and learning. We received tons of papers that we had to screen those for presentation.  The careful screening was done by our able technical committee of the PSITE National Board.

International Research Conference in Higher Education

The paper I co-authored with my students Nick, Karlo and Mari entitled "WordiFy: A Selected Language Translator Using Digital Image Processing" was presented during the International Research Conference in Higher Education with the theme “Responding to the Challenges for Global Excellence through Multi-Disciplinary Research” last October 3-4, 2013 at the Manila Hotel. 

The event, organized by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), aims to promote, strengthen and mainstream research outputs of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in various fields of disciplines and to provide a venue for sharing and discussing research issues, concerns and output in a scholarly but friendly manner.

IdeaSpace 2013

Dubbed as the IdeaSpace: Technopreneur Bootcamp@Region XI, the event was hosted at the University of Southeastern Philippines-Social Hall last September 14, 2013, 08:00am-05:00pm. 

More than 200 students and fresh graduates from the different colleges and universities attended and listened to success stories from start-up mavericks and industry experts and were able to get the chance to pitch to judges for exciting prizes and the possibility of qualifying for the next IdeaSpace National Competition.

SEOUL ACCORD General Membership Meeting

The Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK) invited me to attend the Seoul Accord General Meeting (SAGM2013(Seoul)), Millennium Seoul Hiiton, Seoul, Korea last June 21 to 23, 2013.

The SAGM 2013 meeting highlights: 
  • Most of the proceedings dwelled on correcting sections of the Seoul Accord Documents as presented by the different working groups formed by the signatories in matters of style of presentation. 
  • The Seoul Accord Secretariat for the next two years is IEET (Institution of Engineering Education Taiwan). 
  • The midterm Seoul Accord meeting (2014) will be held in New Zealand on June 14 and 15, 2014.
  • The Seoul Accord Chair for the next two years in Dr. Joe Turner. The Deputy SA Chair is Dr. Dong Yoon Kim.
  • Visited and had a collaborative meeting with  Konkuk University

A Historic Event Indeed!

Philippine Information and Computing Accreditation Board -- MOA signing — with Ito Gruet, Gregg Victor Gabison, Rachel Roxas, Noya Terrado, Calen Martin D. Legaspi, John Peter Abraham Ruero, Peach Tinio, Toti Casino, Rolando Corpus and myself at C2, Bonifacio High Street, The Fort.

The Philippine Information and Computing Accreditation Board (PICAB), Inc., a consortium of the Computing Society of the Philippines (CSP), Philippines Software Industry Association(PSIA), Philippine Computer Society (PCS) and the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators, Foundation Inc (PSITE) was recently formed  and currently is in the process of registering at the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
PICAB recognizes that there is mutual recognition agreement (MRA) of accredited academic computing programs that prepare graduates for professional practice called the Seoul Accord (“Accord”), the primary purpose of which is to contribute to the improvement of computing education worldwide.

PICAB are convinced that it would be to the advantage of Philippine institutions to be so accredited as this will imply equivalency among credentials earned from Accord-accredited programs within and outside the Philippines and such credentials earned in the Philippines will be recognized and respected by institutions and employers outside of the Philippines, thus facilitating employment of and allowing increased deployment of Filipinos

NATCON 2013 President's Report

(Delivered by Dr. Randy S. Gamboa, PSITE President, during the 15th PSITE National Convention held at Crowne Regency, Cebu City, February 21, 2013)

Good morning, Ladies and Gentlemen.

For another year as president of PSITE, I have witnessed how vibrant, dynamic and active the PSITE Board and Chapter Presidents are.

After the successful national convention in General Santos City last February 2012 and electing the new set of officers, we had conducted a strategic planning session in Manila.  In that session, we reviewed, among others where we are in attaining our vision, mission, goals and objectives.

As I have mentioned in the opening program, our vision is to be the premier national IT Professional organization transforming the academic community that enables and sustains the growth of a knowledge-driven Philippine economy.  Allow me to reiterate our mission.  We are committed in providing opportunities for the development of our members through (1) strong community and Partnership involvement with the education providers,  industry, government, non-government agencies and international counterparts (2) dynamic and responsive Education initiatives for an enhanced academic standard (3) relevant community Extension and immersion programs, and (4) aggressive building of Research Capability and effective mentoring system.  In attaining these, we will anchor on the values of professionalism, ethical, service oriented and passion for teaching and lifelong learning.

We aimed to be able to attract more partners.  EMC has extended its academic initiative to PSITE educators and institutions through availment of the EMC academic alliance (EAA) materials for free.

For our Education agenda, our goal is to have a dynamic and responsive educational initiative for enhanced academic standards.  We wanted the deans/program chairs/ faculty to be updated on educational management, curriculum design and review, computer programming techniques, accreditation, teaching strategies, K to 12 preparedness, IT certification, technopreneurship, professionalism and the latest trends in ICT.  This is why the chapters came up with faculty development sessions, conferences and seminars.  This morning there will also be a CHED-TPITE orientation of Seoul Accord Initiatives, K11 and K12 Technology and Multimedia Track, and OBE in ITE Curriculum.

The Extension agenda, we aimed to improve industry immersion.  We initially drafted the guidelines for creating an immersion program.  Last night, we signed a memorandum of understanding with IBM and soon this will be cascaded to the regional chapters.

Some chapters have also gone a long way of having already partnered with the industry as reported earlier.

And lastly, under our Research agenda, it is our desire to help PSITE members to become better undergraduate mentors and improve their capability to do research.  There were training programs conducted to achieve this and opportunities for research papers to be presented were organized.  Proceedings were also published as documentation of the research work. 

Also related to Research is the research manual that PSITE drafted which was adopted by the ChED.  Last year we distributed copies to different chapters and members.  We hope that the manual was useful and beneficial.

Lastly on Research, during the National Conference of IT Education or NCITE in 2012 held in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, aside from the research and poster presentations, a pre-conference activity on the outcome-based education or OBE was also held.  This started the information, education, communication and roll out of OBE in PSITE.  Last month, the board benchmarked with universities in Singapore on OBE best practices. 

PSITE, aside from focusing on academic and educational activities, also takes care of its members.  If you will recall the typhoon Pablo hit Mindanao.  Many of our members, institutional and individual members, were sadly affected by the effect of the typhoon.  Without any hesitation, the PSITE national and our chapters offered prayers and extended aid by sending monetary help ranging from P5,000 to P50,000.  Much as our treasurer would want to report our financial standing today, unfortunately, she will not be able to do so because she just recently suffered a mild stroke.  But she said that we are liquid with a cash in bank of more than 1,000,000 pesos.   

A lot has been accomplished, but a lot more needs to be done.  Slowly, with the dynamism of the officers and members of PSITE, we will be able to achieve what we dream of.

Our Keynote Speaker, who will be properly introduced later, Honorable Mayor Michael L. Rama – City Mayor of Cebu, Convention Chair and PSITE VP for Visayas, Dave Marcial, Co-Convention Chair, Dr. Gregg Victor Gabison, Ms. Larmi Feliscuzo, President of PSITE Region 7, National Board Members, Regional Officers and members of PSITE, Ladies and Gentlemen, maayong hapon sa inyong tanan, magandang hapon po sa inyong lahat, good afternoon everyone.

First of all, let me say that I am very pleased with the turnout of attendance today.  It just reflects, among others, that PSITE has gained grounds in terms of importance, knowledge sharing and networking.  For the next couple of days, we will be witnessing how PSITE has contributed for 15 years in transforming the lT academic community.  From the chapter reports, we will come to know the activities that each chapter has done.  We made some modifications though.  Instead of the usual rundown of activities, we requested the chapter presidents to report based on the PEER agenda in order for us to assess how we faired in our three year plan.  As some of you might have already known, the PEER agenda is P for Partnership, E for Education,  E for Extension and R for Research.  All chapters strived to come up with activities in relation to the PEER agenda.  If you will also note in the program, it is organized according to PEER topics.

As part of the Partnership agenda, during this convention, we shall be witnessing the signing of memorandum of understanding/agreement with new partners.  They are IBM (Faculty Immersion Program), Intel Easy Steps, ISSA (Information Systems Security Assoication)-Philippines T3 Training, and ACCI (Asian Center for Competitive Intelligence).

Since this year is a milestone year, a crystal anniversary for PSITE, 15 years in existence, we shall be awarding special citations to our founders of PSITE, Ms. Fe Ferroils and Dr. Paulino Tan.

Most of the parts of the program are presentations, awarding and interactions.  And speaking of interaction, we will also have time to intermingle and network with our colleagues and contemporaries in the IT community during our socials time.  For tonight, we shall have a sinulog night courtesy of the University of San Jose Recoletos.   The second night is a drink-and-dine session at the Lakwatsa Resto Lounge courtesy of Ngkhai Development Corporation.  To top it all, since this is a milestone year as I mentioned, we will be raffling tablets from today until the third day.  A total of 15 tablets will be given away to the lucky winners.

We sincerely hope that the presentations, sharing of experiences, deliberations and the jubilations during this three-day convention will be helpful and that it will encourage all of us to be together in another 15 years.

On the lighter side, I am encouraging you to experience the sights and sounds of Cebu, the Queen City of the South.  Don’t forget to bring home as pasalubong the famous manga cebu, bulad or dried fish, otap, lechon cebu and other cebu delicacies.  Listen to beautiful music interpreted by Cebuano singers.  I am sure that you will enjoy it.

Let me take this opportunity to thank Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama for allowing us to hold our convention here in your wonderful place and for gracing our affair.  My gratitude to the convention chair Dave Marcial, Co-Convention Chair, Dr. Gregg Victor Gabison and PSITE Region 7 President Larmie Feliscuzo, for organizing and hosting this convention.  It wouldn’t have been possible without your all out dedication and dynamism.  I am very grateful to the partner school, the University of San Jose Recolletos, for their active involvement and participation.  Of course, how could I ever forget our sponsors, for sharing their resources to make this convention not only educational but also enjoyable.  Thank you to our speakers and guests for taking time out to be with us and impart their knowledge and expertise.  And lastly, thank you to the officers and members of PSITE, and all of you, for showing interest as manifested by your presence here today.  Your enthusiasm inspires us to continue making PSITE as a premier national IT professional organization transforming the academic community that enables and sustains the growth of a knowledge-driven Philippine economy.

A team of four students from the Institute of Computing of the University of Southeastern Philippines clinched the Ideaspace Award and a PhP 100,000 cash prize for presenting the best business plan among the ten national finalists to the ninth (9th) Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP) Innovation and Excellence competition, an annual industry-academe awards program backed by Smart Telecommunications, held on February 13-14 at the SMART Tower in Makati City. This is the third year in a row that USeP entered into the finals of the same competition.

For the last two years, student teams from the University’s College of Engineering made it to the finals. This year, two student teams from the USeP Institute of Computing, Team Doc Banana and Team Wordify, qualified into the competition’s finals. Wordify got the Ideaspace Award and cash prize for presenting the best business plan among the ten finalists. Wordify and Doc Banana are both digital image processing-based Android applications. The former is aimed at redefining the process of automated language translation while the latter at speeding up the banana industry’s disease detection process.Team Wordify is composed of project leader Nick Faelnar, Mari Nakaoshi, Karlo Bueno and April Mae Bonto. Project leader Jhun Rey Cubelo, Nikko Comidoy, Laian Joy Chavez, Jesmael Galindo and Alvin Mark CabeliƱo make up the Doc Banana team. Faelnar and Bonto represented Wordify while Comidoy and Galindo suited up for Doc Banana in the two-day event. The student representatives were accompanied by two mentors from the Institute of Computing including Dr. Tamara Cher Mercado, Dean of the Institute.   
Along with other finalists, Comidoy and Faelnar presented their project’s description, block diagram, target market, as well as a demo of their respective applications in front of the competition’s judges and some of the bigwigs in the country’s I.T industry. SMART Telecommunications CEO Manny V. Pangilinan also graced the event during the Awards Night held at Dusit Thani Hotel, Makati City.
The event was a culmination of SWEEP’s search for innovative, community-based and sustainable applications; anchored on this edition’s theme of “Technology in Nation-building”. From a total of 112 entries from SMART SWEEP’s partner schools across the country, the top ten ideas were shortlisted and their proponents were given an opportunity to learn from industry experts in a national bootcamp held last October 5, 2012 – serving as a final precursor for the national finals. 
The achievement ranks as the biggest crown jewel so far for the Technopreneurship program that the USeP Institute of Computing has been offering for the past two years.  Prior to this, the Institute has also been actively participating in local and regional Technopreneurship and tech innovation events.
With the amount of positive results the program has brought to the Institute and with the great head-start this SMART SWEEP award has provided, the USeP IC teaching force expects nothing but further strengthening of the Institute’s Technopreneurship foundation in hope of discovering more noteworthy student tech innovations in the future. The Institute of Computing is an academic unit in the USeP that offers Master of Science in Information Science; Master of Science in Library Information Science; Bachelor of Science in Computer Science; and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology.  (Michael Jandayan and USeP PIO)

Hongkong Benchmarking Educational Tour

I joined the PSITE National Board Hongkong Benchmarking Educational Tour last January 03-06, 2013. We visited the office of the Hongkong Computer Society, The University of Hongkong and the Hongkong University of Science and Technology.

The primary purpose of the educational tour is to learn more about Hongkong Universities, its systems, processes and outstanding performance being regarded as a University of world-class standing. During the visit, the group discussed and shared university administrative knowledge particularly on the Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) framework as well as the basic criteria for excellence to help us make baseline assessment of current practices.

Along with the above objectives, the group was much interested to experience the University’s historical architecture and to take a walk in its literary footsteps and learn its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) innovations.
